For the hikers who look after walking the trails from the Eastern side of Piatra Craiului Mountains, the best starting point is Curmatura mountain hut. If you come from the small town of Zarnesti, normally you will follow the trail from Fantana lui Botorog (Botorog’s Well) or the trail that cross Crapaturii Valley.
During our tour, we’ll walk both trails, spending some time at Crapaturii Saddle and Curmatura mountain hut. The route is one of the most popular ones from Piatra Craiului Mountains, providing both accessibility and diversity.

After leaving Zărnești town we’ll follow for short time the road that make the link with Plaiul Foii mountain hut, but soon we’ll meet our track which turns left and starts climbing up and traversing to the right the slopes of Piatra Mica Mountain.
Guided by the well done and marked track, we pass through „Sub Barc” glades (local name for hayfields from Northern slopes of Piatra Mica Mountain), and after about 11/2 hour we reach Crapaturii Valley, whose deep gully separates Piatra Mica Mountain from Piatra Craiului Mountain.
Optional, we can make a twist to visit Coltul Chiliilor Orthodox Monastery, a beautiful and spiritual place, mentioned for the first time in 1723. At the end of this visit we’ll come back on the same trail for reaching again Crapaturii Valley.
From now on we’ll walk the most difficult and demanding part of the route, but the most spectacular and rewarding. At the very beginning, the track squezees in the forest becoming soon narrower being tightly kept between the rock walls. For about 1 hour we’ll climb up the mountain bypassing rock blocks and traversing gravel areas, but admiring the towers arisen from the middle of the forest or vegetation that invades the valey. Soon, we arrive near Acul Crapaturii; there are high walls everywhere around this area accommodating climbing routes with different levels of difficulty.
Taking again the track, we continue our ascent following a chain of towers; behind them we enter into the spruce fir forest who ends when we reach the ridge line, place known as Crapaturii Saddle (1601m). Once arrived here we can allow to us a longer break to admire the aperture of Crapaturii Valley and the entrances into two of the most beautiful trekking routes from Piatra Craiului Mountains: Northern Ridge and Piatra Mica.
Starting our descent, in about 15 minutes we’ll arrive at Curmatura mountain hut (1470m) the place where we’ll stop for lunch and hydration.
For returning back to the town we’ll follow an easier route that will lead us, through Poiana Zanoaga and Padina lui Danisor, to Botorog’s Well where we’ll meet the road who comes from Prapastiile Zarnestilor. From now, we leave the track and following the road we reach the town of Zarnesti in about 45 minutes.
